This One’s For the Girls

Today it starts. Today people will hold the book in their hands and read it for the first time. It’s pretty exciting. But the truth is, I have no perspective on this book. At all. I’ve read it too many times, in too many iterations. I’ve scoured it when it had 0 design and held 802 individual entries. Then 425 pieces. Then 315. Then 207. Then 152. Over the last year, as the design grew, as the book shaped, it became what people will read tonight and all this week. This crazy, crazy week that starts in Houston, then moves to DC, then to Dallas, then to Austin.

And that’s just the beginning. But the beginning is beautiful. Starting with this astonishing trailer created by the wondrous Katherine Center. She wrote the book’s introduction, and these words are hers. So it’s powerful to hear her read them. But the truth is, every contributor to this project has such a powerful voice in the world today. And for each one that made it into the well-designed pages, there are 1,000,000 more voices ringing right this second. Out there. In some kind of weird harmony that makes a complete, contradictory, and profoundly true story.

It’s happening every day. But today, this particular collection is complete.

It’s been a surprising adventure, a learning experience, a labor of love. And for the record, I’m really glad the creation part is over. Because I’m so happy it’s here. And I’m so beyond thrilled to share it with you.

This one’s for the girls.

Kirtsy Takes a Bow is Here!

The Kirtsy Book!

It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here!

The book we’ve been working on forever.
It has been birthed.
It now exists.

The Kirtsy Book!

The Kirtsy book will arrive on the earth on November 15th, 2009.

The Kirtsy Book!

You know how people write books and they go on and on about how hard it is wah wah wah and how they have deadlines sob sob, and how they feel like they’ve climbed a mountain while birthing a child, and doing advanced calculus problems on an abacus. And you’re all, puuuhleeeease, whaaat-ev-er. You’re writing a book, not curing cancer. Get over yourself!

The Kirtsy Book!

You know what I’m talking about.

The Kirtsy Book!

Well, it turns out those people also know what they’re talking about. Because this creating a book thing, well, it weirdly takes over your brain, and your nights, and weekends. But I must say, like so many things (calculus excluded), I think it’s totally worth it.

The Kirtsy Book!

Because this book is gorgeous. It includes 100 amazing writers, photographers, designers, entrepreneurs, and more and also andandandandand. It’s interesting. It’s well designed. And you can read more about it right here on this very site.

The Kirtsy Book!

You can also order it from a variety of places, and it will be in bookstores near you soonish or so they say. But, for now, so you can get it faster, here’s what I’ll do. If you order it directly from Bright Sky Press, I will sign every copy before it’s delivered to you. Well, every copy ordered there in November. Unless you don’t want me to sign it, and then I totally won’t. No really. You’re the boss.

The Kirtsy Book!

Kirtsy founders, partners, editors, friends, writers and contributors will all be meeting up and greeting up at eight (so far!) lovely book events across the country. Click here to see where we will be and when.

Some come on! Join us! We can’t wait to see you there!

But first, I’m going to take a really long nap.
